Charles Brigham, 1899Boston Landmark
Here is one exception to Boston’s avoidance of flamboyant architecture. Like the New York Vanderbilt mansion by Richard Morris Hunt, this grand house was inspired by the Chenonceaux in France. Both inside and outside, the lush French Gothic and Early Renaissance ornament are quite overwhelming. The roofline along Hereford Street is particularly evocative, with two turret towers, several decorated chimneys, and dormers. A charming greenhouse with curved glass roof and dome is attached to the back of the house.
