Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott, 1999
Harleston Parker Medal, 2001
The renovation of one of Boston’s most important and beloved buildings brought McKim Mead and White’s monumental edifice back to life. From its stone facades to its radiant John Singer Sargent murals, the work was executed using the most advanced restoration techniques.
From the HPM jury comments:
"There were strong arguments, finally persuasive, that acknowledging the resurrection of a building so critical to the cultural life of the City of Boston is deserving of Parker recognition: the BPL is an architectural icon; the civic effort to restore it and give it new life deserves the highest recognition; this project affects and serves a large and diverse public; and the architectural endeavor was significant, successful and worth emulating."
